How does a toaster work?
An electric toaster is a quick, effective and foolproof alternative to using the grill function on your oven to have toasted bread. But they both use the same form of energy to cook the bread: heat.
A toaster converts electricity from the power point into enough heat as quickly as is necessary to cook the bread to the desired amount as quickly as possible.
But electricity is one form of energy and heat is another. The toaster has to convert the electricity (stored offsite in eg batteries) into, in this case, heat. It does this by passing the electricity through a row of thin wires within the toaster.
The passage of the electricity, or energy, through these wires (or filaments) is like small particles (atoms) passing through a pipe: they collide with each other and that makes them very hot and glow red as the process continues. The heat produced cooks, or ‘toasts’ the bread.
This is exactly the same process as an electric radiator uses to heat a space in a room.
How do you clean a toaster?
